Town Hall on Saturday
Each year the Utah Valley Chamber of Commerce sponsors free breakfasts called “Eggs and Issues” for constituents to meet with their legislators. The first event is scheduled for this coming Saturday, January 30 at 7:15 a.m. at the Utah Valley Regional Medical Center, Northwest Plaza. I hope to see you there!
Coming to the Hill?
I love seeing friendly faces! Last year, many of you stopped by to see the action, get involved or just say hello. If you are planning to come to the capitol, please let me know the day before so we can arrange a time to meet and give you a chance to visit the House floor. (And take a selfie if you don’t mind.)
Legislative Involvement
It is important to me to hear from constituents during the legislative session. You are encouraged to reach out to me through social media, by e-mail (
normthurston64@gmail.com), or by text
(801-477-5348). During the session I will also be active on Twitter (@normthurston) and Facebook. I hope you will follow me online and provide feedback and comments.
We are also working on a tool to allow you to “live chat” with me during public hearings/meetings. If you are interested in participating in real time, please let me know so we can include you in this exciting new tool.
Republican Presidential “Primary”
In order to increase voter participation and increase the visibility of Utah in the presidential elections by holding our vote earlier, the Utah Republican Party has introduced a major change in the way you can vote in the Presidential Primary. Here are some things to consider:
- Instead of voting at polling places at the statewide primary in June, Republican voters will vote for their preferred candidate for United States President at their neighborhood caucus meetings on March 22, 2016.
- All registered voters that are affiliated as Republicans will be able to vote.
- Registered voters that are unaffiliated can affiliate as Republican at the meeting and vote at that time.
- Provisions will be made for absentee participation so you can vote wherever you happen to be that night. Details have not been announced.
- The current plan is to use a smartphone app for voting. Those without devices will be able to use a device provided at the meeting.
- Results will be tabulated and reported statewide close to real time.
Please mark you calendar for March 22, 2016 and plan to attend your neighborhood caucus.
